We just started to watch an interesting show on Spike TV online; Surviving Disaster Season 1. This first episode is 42 minutes long and is on home invasions, where they simulate 2 home invasions and how you can help defend yourself.

One is about a home robbery, the other a well planned kidnapping. They start with the home invasion robbery. They say there are 8,000 home invasions every day in North America, 8,000 freaking thousand home invasions on this continent.

Oh, I think we forgot to mention we were wrong on the 1,000,000 violent crimes every year, we apologize, there are 4,000,000 violent crimes in the USA each year.

So watch the video and pick up some tips. We will give you a few good tips here to prevent or slow down a home invasion robbery:

1. Your first line of defense will be to set up a perimeter motion activated alarm system. For non-lethal, you have a few options. The 3 year old boy who we told you was kidnapped during a home invasion robbery in San Bernardino is still missing, and I am sure the parents are freaking out. Though we heard there was a lot of traffic there, so they could have had a drug or whore house going on.

Not sure if you saw this yet, though a home invasion robbery in San Bernardino resulted in a women’s son being kidnapped! The home invaders entered the home, and tied up the mother and her five children. They looked for money, then took some cell phones and one of her sons.

While these people are innocent until proven guilty in court, reports from neighbors describe a lot of people coming & going, so it could be a drug or whore house. We don’t know, only that the punks entered through a window.

Let this be a lesson that no matter where you live, you could be the next victim of a home invasion robbery. A good way to keep windows closed is with a round or square stick that will stop a punk from sliding it open. They also make metal window devices that sit in the slide and lock down to prevent window openings.

It’s not a good idea to leave open windows at night if you live on the ground floor, or a second story window that can be easily accessed.

Then you need a couple things to protect yourself; a motion detection alarm, and a huge fogging pepper spray.

While we never think about it, we can be a victim of crime at any time. With so many people out of work, many are resorting to crime to pay the bills. The question is not will you be a victim, rather when will it be your turn?

A great website to bookmark is The Crime Doctor, who has an interesting article on protecting your family during a home invasion robbery. Many great points are brought up that you should burn to memory.

Residential robberies usually occur during the day when no one is home and the signs are there that a burglar is looking for. They work alone and are quickly in and out.

There are many things you can do to discourage burglars:

Home invasion robberies are different and you should be ready for such an attack. Many types of people are candidates, single women, elderly people, wealthy people, drug dealers, or business owners. They might follow you home, or they might be waiting at your home or business.

They usually work at night and weekends, under the cover of darkness and when someone is home. They work in teams and overwhelm you with violence, fear, and aggressive action that could hurt or kill you.

You have about 60 seconds to repel the attack, otherwise your chances of emerging safely decrease as the time goes by. There was a recent movie with two yuppie college boys who did just this. They would be seen at a house by the neighbors, before the struggle with the owners, then they would bound them and hold them hostage.

Will you be ready to repel the attack? You should plan this through before you are caught with your pants down. There are many products you can use to prevent or repel the attacks, or at least slow them down.

Your first line of defense should be an outdoor motion detection system that will alert you when someone comes onto your property. The Voice Alert Driveway And Home Alarm System is an inexpensive perimeter security system that blankets an area with invisible infrared sensors. When someone crosses in front of them, the sensors send a signal to the base station that has pre-recorded alerts that identify where on your property the sensor is activated. Even better are motion detectors with auto dialers that will automatically call a series of pre-programed numbers, and some have loud alarms that will alert the neighbors. Some popular ones are the Cybereye ECHO, which is a silent alarm motion and fire detector that will call up to 5 numbers and depending on if it’s motion or fire, call the police or fire department.

One better is the Mace Wireless Home Security System, which comes with door and window sensors that send a signal to a base station that then sounds a loud alarm and calls a series of phone numbers, including the police.

These are great products to have if you are home, or even on vacation.

The next step is a safe room that has a reinforced entry, is stocked with food, water, weapons, communication devices, and a breathing device should tear gas, pepper spray, or other gas be forced into the room.

However, none of this stuff will do you any good if you keep your windows or doors open or unlocked. You need to educate yourself and your family and practice what you would do when there is a knock at the door, or when there is a loud bang at the door, or a window is broken.

Other good tips are use your doors peephole, or install a peephole door camera so you can see it from the living room or the office. Call the police if you see suspicious figures and let your neighbors know if a shady person comes to your door that you don’t trust.

A good video surveillance system for indoor and outdoor is also beneficial. If you have been watching the news, you have seen massive lay-offs all across the country and crime has gone up, up, and up! Theft and burglary has been increasing in every city, and unless you have someone watching your place night and day, or a guard dog, you have a good chance of being robbed.

If you can’t keep a dog, the Electronic Secure Dog does a very good job of guarding your home or business when no one is there. We will put together a video of the Electronic Watch Guard later tonight and you can see how incredible it is.

When it is in front of you, it doesn’t sound that scary, however, when we went outside, it sounded like a medium sized dog was in the back part of the house barking away.

If we lingered around, it would change it’s bark and get a little more aggressive. If you live alone and are elderly, or a single women, for the price of dinner and a movie, you have a good alarm that should scare away most burglars.

If you own a business, you can set it to sound a chime, or a jungle sound, when there is movement, like when a customer walks in the door to alert you.

Our series on burgularies on the rise has no shortage of fodder. Today we find someone stealing copper out of someones truck. Seems this guy in Arizona is tired of punks ripping off his property, so he set up a silent alarm system and a hidden camera.

Tempe homeowner uses hidden technology to catch a thief

A Valley homeowner tired of being a victim of crime used hidden technology on Tuesday to catch a thief. That homeowner’s actions are now under investigation by police because he also fired a gunshot.

Police said at about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, 23-year-old Daniel Holmes attempted to steal copper from the bed of the 27-year-old homeowner’s truck. The homeowner was alerted because he had previously set up a silent alarm and camera system due to previous thefts from his truck which he parked outside his home near Price and Broadway roads.

As Holmes started his engine, the homeowner fired several shots into the hood, which disabled the vehicle.

Burglaries Have Surged 21 Percent
Police Put Some Blame on Economy, Boost Patrols; Overall Violence Falls

Burglaries are on the rise in the District, with police blaming the souring economy as a contributing factor in a 21 percent increase in break-ins over the same period last year.

Criminals are jimmying locks, kicking in front doors, breaking through roof hatches and skylights, and sometimes even sawing security bars off windows to get into houses and businesses, police said. They are hauling off computers, flat-screen televisions, jewelry, digital media players and other items, which they then sell.

Sawing off security bars? Sounds like a tweaker, or someone really desperate, as it could take a while to saw off a steel bar, and I though the idea was to get in & out. There are some great home security devices on the market that every home or apartment should have.

Police data show that 922 burglaries were reported in the city in the first quarter of the year, compared with 761 in the same span last year. The biggest increases have been reported of Capitol Hill and in neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River, including Congress Heights.

Overall violence, however, is dipping across the city, with homicides down by 11 percent this year. With the busier summer months approaching, police are trying to get a handle on the burglary problem while keeping violence down.

“It’s the burglaries that are getting us this year,” said Cmdr. Joel Maupin, who heads the 7th District, in the southernmost area east of the Anacostia River in Ward 8. Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes said someone looking to commit a crime for money might find burglaries more appealing than a face-to-face street robbery. Most of the burglaries have occurred during the day or when no one is on the premises.

“It’s easy cash,” said Groomes, who tracks trends as head of patrol operations. “And unlike a robbery, you generally don’t have someone looking at you, so it’s easier to get away with it.”
